FRANCE - Major fire breaks out at Ritz hotel in Paris

A major fire broke out on the top floor of the Ritz in Paris’s elegant Place Vendôme on Tuesday, just two months before the luxury hotel was due to reopen after more than three years of renovation work. Firemen succeeded in containing the blaze late Tuesday morning, after it burned out of control for several hours.

“The risk of [the fire] spreading has been eliminated,” Yvon Bot, a spokesman for the Paris fire department, told Reuters. “The fire is under control, there’s no more risk of it spreading, but the operation will be ongoing for awhile.”
There were no casualties, according to the Paris fire department, which deployed around 60 firefighters to battle the blaze. The fire was reported at around 6am (0500 GMT) on the last floor of the Ritz, which has been closed for renovation since August 1, 2012. The hotel was due to re-open in mid-March. The former home of fashion designer Coco Chanel and author Marcel Proust – and a favorite drinking hole of American writer Ernest Hemingway – the Ritz Paris was last renovated over a decade beginning in 1979 after its purchase by tycoon Mohamed Al-Fayed.
