Plane crashes into Akron, Ohio apartment building
A small airplane crashed into a residential area of Akron, Ohio. Many local residents are without power, and the building is on fire.
Two people have died, Akron police told WEWS-TV. It is assumed they were on board the plane as no one was injured inside the apartment building, and all the residents are accounted for, local officials said.

Anti-austerity bloc brings down Portugal's government
Portugal’s pro-austerity government has been forced to resign by a leftist anti-austerity block, despite being sworn in only two weeks ago.
Proposals to continue austerity policies were blocked in parliament, backed by mass public anger, forcing the government to dissolve.
The moderate Socialists worked with the Communist Party and radical Left Bloc to form a majority that voted down fresh austerity proposals today.

‘Bogus bomb detectors’ used in Sharm el-Sheikh hotels before Sinai plane crash
Bomb detectors used in Sharm el-Sheikh hotels as part of security procedures introduced to tackle terrorism have been exposed as “fake” by experts, it has emerged.
Hundreds of Britons are still stranded in the Egyptian resort after a plane carrying 224 people crashed in Sinai last week.
Foreign Secretary Phillip Hammond announced on Monday it is “highly likely” a bomb planted by Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) supporters caused the disaster.
A number of hotels in the resort have been using a wand-like aerial attached to a box to screen luggage.

Putin: US missile defense aimed at neutralizing Russia nukes, N. Korea & Iran just a cover
Vladimir Putin said the US is trying to “neutralize Russia’s nuclear potential” with its on-going deployment of a missile defense shield in Europe. The Russian president has promised a response.
“References to Iran and North Korea nuclear threats are just a cover for the true purpose [of NATO missile defense]. That is to neutralize the potential of other nuclear states not the US or its allies – primarily Russia,” Putin said during a meeting in Sochi dedicated to national military development. “The US is attempting to achieve strategic military superiority, with all the consequences that entails.”
In response, the Russian leader promised Russia would take the “necessary measures to respond by strengthening its own strategic forces.”
Putin said Russia’s concerns over missile defense had been “ignored.”
“We have pointed out that these actions [construction of the shield] are an attempt to undermine the nuclear parity principle, and to destabilize the existing world and regional order.”

23 killed, 65 injured by shelling in Latakia city, Syria
At least 23 people have been killed by shelling in the Syrian city of Latakia. Another 65 were injured, RIA Novosti reported citing a source in local police.
“Twenty-three people have been killed and at least 65 hospitalized with injuries of varying degrees,” the police source said.
There are conflicting reports on the number of casualties coming from the port city of Latakia at the moment.

1,800 evacuated after bomb threat at Munich area Microsoft HQ
At least 1,800 employees of Microsoft have been evacuated after reports of a bomb threat in its Munich-area headquarters, police said, as cited by local press. The premises are in the Lohhof community, which consists of industrial parks 19km north of the city.
According to the German newspaper Süddeutsche, the company received a threatening call at about 12:06pm local time.
