Deeper than Titanic: El Faro shipwreck footage 2,500ft underwater
The U.S. National Transportation and Safety Board on Sunday (January 3) released underwater video showing the wreckage of the El Faro cargo ship, which disappeared with 33 crew members on board on October 1 and was found in deep water off the Bahamas a month later.
The wreckage is sitting in a spot that is 2,500 feet (760 meters) deep, even deeper than the Titanic, and beyond the reach of divers.

Allies back Saudi Arabia in showdown with Iran
Saudi Arabia's regional allies have stepped up diplomatic pressure on Iran, breaking or downgrading relations with the country following an attack on the Saudi embassy in Tehran, which followed executions in the kingdom.
Bahrain announced on Monday that it was closing its embassy in Iran, and called upon Iranian diplomats to leave the country within 48 hours. Bahrain frequently accuses Iran of being behind protests among its Shia population. Within hours of the announcement, Sudan also said it was cutting off diplomatic relations with Iran "in solidarity with Saudi Arabia." Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates said it was downgrading its ties with Iran, replacing its ambassador with an embassy officer-in-charge. The latest developments come as Saudi announced on Monday that it was also cutting commercial ties with Iran and cancelled all flights to and from Iran, according to Reuters.

Saudi Arabia to cut commercial ties, flights to Iran
Riyadh is planning to cut off all flights between Saudi Arabia and Iran, and will ban its citizens from traveling to the Islamic Republic, the Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told Reuters.
Al-Jubeir said, however, that Iranian pilgrims were still welcome to visit Saudi Arabia’s holy sites of Mecca and Medina.
"There is no escalation on the part of Saudi Arabia. Our moves are all reactive. It is the Iranians who went into Lebanon. It is the Iranians who sent their Qods Force and their Revolutionary Guards into Syria," he said demanding Tehran "act like a normal country" before any talks of restoring the severed diplomatic relations.
The minister added that Riyadh was right to execute leading Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr. Al-Jubeir accused him of "agitating, organizing cells, providing them with weapons and money." Riyadh should be applauded for executions, not criticized, he said.

Неизвестные обстреляли минувшей ночью сотрудников полиции
на востоке Саудовской Аравии в деревне, где родился известный шиитский
проповедник Нимр ан-Нимр, в отношении которого в исполнение была приведена
высшая мера наказания. Как сообщило в понедельник МВД королевства, один человек
погиб, а также один ребенок получил ранения, передает ИТАР-ТАСС.
Напомним, в субботу Саудовская Аравия объявила о массовой казни 47 человек, причастных к экстремизму и терроризму. Среди них был известный шиитский проповедник Нимр ан-Нимр.
Казнь ан-Нимра также спровоцировала демонстрации, как в
самой Саудовской Аравии, так и за рубежом. В МИД королевства заявили, что в
Иране манифестанты нанесли ущерб дипмиссии королевства в Тегеране и Мешхеде. В
результате Эр-Рияд объявил о разрыве дипотношений и потребовал от иранских
дипломатов покинуть страну в течение 48 часов.

6.8 quake rocks India near Myanmar border
A powerful earthquake measuring 6.8 in magnitude has hit northwest eastern India, close to the border with Myanmar, the US Geological Survey has reported.
The quake was 57 kilometers (35 miles) deep and centered 33 kilometers northwest of Imphal, the capital city of the Manipur state.
