- science

Chernobyl, 30 anni dopo arriva l'"Arco"

LESBOS ISLAND - Jordan's Queen Rania questions EU migration deal with Turkey

More than 300 migrants have been rescued from boats in the Mediterranean by the medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières. The group has been taken to the Sicilian port of Pozzallo. Italian authorities say some 24,000 migrants and refugees have arrived since the start of the year. Four times the number for the same period in 2015. Visiting the Greek island of Lesbos, Jordan’s Queen Rania questioned the EU migration deal that sees refugees and migrants returned to Turkey if they can’t claim asylum in Europe.
“The responsibility for this crisis cannot be defined by geography. And I believe that we have to bring humanity and compassion back into the narrative,” said Queen Rania. “Because at the end of the day, this is a crisis about human beings – not about borders and barriers. It is about human dignity – not about deals.”
But the Queen’s feelings aren’t seemingly shared by Hungarian and Austrian authorities which have stepped up a so-called green border. The temporary police control, backed by more than 700 soldiers, is meant to stop increasing human trafficking. It’s unclear when the measure will end.

AMERICA - Tim Bosma trial: Marlena Meneses to be cross-examined

CBC's live coverage of the Tim Bosma murder trial continues Monday with the cross-examination of Marlena Meneses — the former girlfriend of Mark Smich, one of the two men accused of killing Bosma.
Last week Meneses, 22, testified that Smich told her his co-accused, Dellen Millard, shot and killed Bosma. That testimony will be challenged today during cross-examination. Smich, 28, of Oakville, Ont., and Millard, 30, of Toronto are charged with first-degree murder in Bosma's death. Both have pleaded not guilty.Meneses said she hasn't spoken to Smich since the arrest. "The day he got arrested, I just figured why even bother still being with him," she said.
Bosma, 32, who lived in the suburban Ancaster area of Hamilton, vanished on May 6, 2013, after taking two men on a test drive in a pickup truck he was trying to sell. Investigators later found charred human remains, believed to belong to Bosma, in a livestock incinerator on Millard's farm in Waterloo, Ont.
