Coal mine collapse in northern Russia, evacuation of 105 workers underway
A collapse caused by a suspected brittle rock burst in Vorkuta, Russia, has reportedly left 105 coal miners trapped underground. Evacuation of the personnel is underway.
The incident occurred at the Severnaya coal mine in the northern Russian Komi Republic.
The mine is beyond the Arctic Circle and is difficult to reach.
The mine is located above the Arctic Circle, and is hard to reach. A source in the Russian Emergencies Ministry has told RT that the situation is being managed by local rescuers, who are now taking the miners to the surface in small groups.
All operations at the facility have been halted. According to the latest data from the mine’s operator, there were 105 workers underground at the time of the incident, 60 have already been pulled up. Most of the miners were working at a depth of 1 kilometer, when the suspected pressure burst took place.
Earlier reports suggested there were 88 miners inside.
"The top priority now is to pull people out of the mine, and then we can try to determine what exactly happened," mine dispatcher Elizaveta Nakhtigal told RT.
The stricken Severnaya coal mine belongs to Vorkutaugol, an integral part of the industrial giant Severstal.

Dozens quarantined, 3 sick, after US Customs receives suspicious envelope
Up to 50 people have been quarantined after an employee opened envelope with a suspicious powdery substance in an United States Customs office in Alameda .
A 2:43 pm emergency call was made reporting the employee feeling sick immediately after opening the envelope, KNTV reported.
Two more people also felt sick. Fire officials say their symptoms are not deadly, but the workers are receiving treatment under quarantine, and a HAZMAT crew is on location telling others to stay away from the area.
Alameda Fire officials established a "hot zone".

Man detained as hostage situation in central London restaurant ends
Police have detained a man following a hostage situation in an Italian restaurant in central London. Officers have confirmed that the incident was not terror related.
The situation took place at the Bella Italia restaurant, located right in the center of the UK’s capital on Leicester Square late on Wednesday.
“The incident at a restaurant in Irving Street has now been resolved and a man has been detained by police. No reported injuries,” Met police said.
