Suspected Jihadist Girl Arrested in France Before Trip to Syria

Jihad Girl
A 16-year-old girl suspected of trying to travel to Syria to join Islamist rebels was arrested at an airport in France, French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said Sunday. Cazeneuve said in a statement that the teenager was arrested Saturday at the Nice airport, in southeastern France, before she was able to board a flight to Turkey. A 20-year-old man was also arrested for allegedly recruiting the girl and paying her airfare, the statement said. The girl's family "knew nothing of her intentions," Cazeneuve said. France estimates that 800 of its citizens have left to join Islamist groups in Syria, according to Reuters. Cazeneuve urged parents who suspect that their children are displaying signs of "violent radicalization" to call a hotline he created in late April. Since that time, 300 reports have been called in, a quarter of which were regarding children and 45 percent of which involved females, according to the Interior Ministry.

Moscow Expats Face Shortage of International Schools

Expats schools in Moscow
For many foreign professionals debating a move to Moscow, the deciding factor is not the amount of money they'll make or even the career-boosting potential of the position. They worry about their family's safety and whether or not their children will have a high-quality education.
But long waiting lists persist at most international schools as the Russian academic year kicked off on Monday, despite the vigorous expansion of existing educational institutions and a steady trickle of new arrivals.

Questions Remain Unanswered 10 Years After Beslan

Question over the children

The children who set off for their first day of school 10 years ago in the small Caucasus town of Beslan, North Ossetia, will graduate from high school this coming academic year — at least, those who survived will. On Sept. 1, 2004, a group of 32 armed terrorists took as their hostages more than 1,110 people, including schoolchildren, their parents, relatives and teachers. The group demanded that Moscow recognize Chechnya's complete independence and withdraw all Russian forces from the restive republic. The three-day hostage crisis claimed 385 lives, including those of 156 children, and left 700 victims injured. Ten years have passed since the attack — a decade often described as a pivotal period in Russia's recent history. But many of the key questions raised by the tragedy remain unanswered.

Kazakhstan's Model Is the Best Bet for Ukraine

Kazakhstan Model

Talks in Minsk meant to establish a roadmap to peace in Ukraine have, sadly, led to little else but a grim handshake between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart, Petro Poroshenko. Somewhat more positively though, Ukraine, Russia and the EU will hold talks today on the supply of Russian gas. Indeed, the trade connections between the East and West are in many ways central to Ukraine's crisis, which first began over Kiev's decision to sign the EU-Ukraine association agreement. As European Commission spokesperson Chantal Hughes noted, it is vital that the EU explain why the controversial association agreement does not threaten Russia's interests. If the EU cannot adequately make its case, the current talks are unlikely to bring any lasting peace to the region.

Branson Banks On £2bn Virgin Money Float

Virgin Bank

Sir Richard Branson is poised to pull the trigger on a stock market listing of Virgin's banking arm that City insiders predict could value it at up to £2bn. Sky News has learnt that directors of Virgin Money are in talks with advisers about announcing an intention to float as soon as early October, as they look to exploit strong current trading and investors' appetite to buy shares in the company.
A final decision about the timing of an initial public offering (IPO) will not be taken for several weeks and it remains a strong possibility that Virgin Money could opt to wait until next year, according to people close to the company. If it does press the button on a listing this year, Virgin Money, which has more than four million customers, would become the third so-called challenger bank to sell shares on the London Stock Exchange this year. One Savings, which does not offer current accounts, listed during the spring, while TSB was spun out of Lloyds Banking Group as part of the bank's state aid settlement with Brussels triggered by its taxpayer bailout in 2008.

Health Minister Awa Marie Coll Seck told reporters on Friday that a young man from Guinea was confirmed to have contracted the virus. The man was immediately placed in quarantine, she added. The current outbreak, which began in Guinea, has killed more than 1,500 people across the region.

BREAKING NEWS - BREAKING NEWS :UK terrorist threat level raised to 'severe', Theresa May says

The UK international terror threat level has been raised to "severe", Home Secretary Theresa May has said. The new alert level means an attack is "highly likely". It is the second highest of five possible threat levels:
Critical - attack expected imminently
Severe - attack highly likely
Substantial - attack a strong possibility
Moderate - attack possible but not likely
Low - an attack unlikely
Mrs May said there was no intelligence to suggest an attack was "imminent" but that the level had been raised in response to events in Iraq and Syria. The threat level in the UK last changed in July 2011 when it was reduced to "substantial".
