Obama: Ebola Threatens Profound Implications

Ebola implications
President Barack Obama has warned of "profound implications" if the world does not act to stop the ebola outbreak in West Africa, as he sent 3,000 US troops to the region. On Tuesday's visit to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, President Barack Obama outlined measures to prop up health services in areas overwhelmed by the epidemic. He said it was the largest international response in the history of the federal agency, while stressing that the chances of an outbreak in the US were "extremely low". The virus has claimed more than 2,400 lives this year - mostly in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.

Russians urged 'don't panic' as rouble hits new low

Rublo state
Russian authorities urged people not to panic on Tuesday as the rouble fell to a new all-time low against the US dollar amid concerns about the effect of sanctions on the country's economy. The rouble fell about 1% to 38.71 per dollar, the weakest it has been since the currency was restructured in 1998. Last week, the US and Europe introduced further sanctions against Russia for its actions in Ukraine.
"Don't panic," said deputy finance minister Alexei Moiseyev.Ordinary Russians are concerned the fall in the rouble could drive up the already high rate of inflation. In early September annual inflation was 7.7% as the weaker rouble increased the cost of foreign imports and Moscow's food import ban reduced competition. The central bank aims to reduce inflation to 4.5% next year and Mr Moiseyev said authorities would act to curb any further increases.

Ode to the Closed McDonald's at Pushkin Square

In Russia, we don't panic easily. We get used to change fairly quickly. On the day of the self-imposed embargo of Western food, my Facebook page was flooded by jokes about delicious Belarussian mussels and toothsome Chinese ham, some of them already in comic strip form. The reality is that we'll get the same food with a "Made in Belarus" sticker glued on. And a new price, of course. Let those girls cry over the loss of mascarpone, we'll still have our Scottish whiskey and Irish stout, those most sacred of items.
But the closure of the first McDonald's — and the more that followed amid sanitation concerns — was different. People got long faces. Everything about this particular branch of the American fast-food giant was iconic for a person born in Soviet Russia. Just as St. Petersburg was once considered our "window to Europe," this restaurant was our "window to the world." Opened on the last day of 1990, the last New Year's Eve of the Soviet Union's existence, for a symbolic yearly rent of one ruble, the McDonald's represented the change that we'd all been waiting for.

Attuale. Quella vera. Benvenuti in Italia, Paese dove c'e'gente che va (poca) e gente che viene (tanta).

Russian economy

The Russian government will offer the economy the kind of investment it needs because of its large state social spending commitments, former finance minister Alexei Kudrin said Tuesday.
A strong advocate of liberal reforms and fiscal prudence, Kudrin has become almost the lone voice among the Russian elite to criticize government policy in dealing with the fallout from the Ukraine crisis.
At a foreign business conference, Kudrin said he expected the Russian economy to stagnate this year or weaken further, and that growth would be negative in 2015, well below government forecasts for 0.5 percent in 2014 and 1 percent next year. With the economy slowing and social spending increasing, the government cannot invest in the economy at the levels it requires to weather Western sanctions, he said. "The government's support is limited, bound by continued large special spending," Kudrin said.
Several state and private companies have suggested they would need to turn to the government for funds to weather Western sanctions. Russian state oil producer Rosneft has asked for $40 billion. Kudrin also said he welcomed the government's plan to turn eastwards for investment and demand but that it would take 20 years for those new trade relations to develop fully.

Doctor In Poison Case Had 'Fatal Attraction'

doctor's fatal attraction

A Texas cancer doctor who allegedly laced her lover's coffee with poison had "a fatal attraction" to her victim, a prosecutor has said. Dr Ana Maria Gonzalez-Angulo went on trial on Monday, accused of giving Dr George Blumenschein two cups of tainted coffee last year.
The 43-year-old breast cancer oncologist denies aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against the colleague with whom she was having an affair. "This case is about a woman who was totally obsessed," said Assistant Harris County District Attorney Justin Keiter in opening statements, reports the Houston Chronicle. But Gonzalez-Angulo's lawyer said this was "complete hyperbole".
Dr Blumenschein, who had a long-term girlfriend, was having a casual relationship with the accused when she gave him two cups of tainted coffee on January 27, 2013, according to court documents. After he mentioned his drink tasted unusual, Gonzalez-Angulo allegedly told him it was just sweetener and urged him to carry on drinking. Hours later he began experiencing slurred speech and poor balance.
Dr Blumenschein was taken to an emergency centre, where he was found to have kidney failure, central nervous system depression and cardiopulmonary complications. The lung, head and neck cancer specialist had dialysis and survived. The prosecution says Gonzalez-Angulo spiked the beverage with ethylene glycol, the main ingredient in antifreeze, because their relationship was turning sour.
The colourless, ordourless chemical was widely available at the University of Texas medical centre where both doctors worked, say prosecutors. But the defence says there is no proof of ethylene glycol being found in Dr Blumenschein's body. On May 30 last year, investigators charged Gonzalez-Angulo with aggravated assault in connection with the alleged poisoning.

Millions of banknotes sent to Scotland in case Yes vote sparks panic run on cash machines

After tomorrow the historical decision

Britain’s banks have been quietly moving millions of banknotes north of the border to cope with any surge in demand by Scots to withdraw cash in the event of a Yes vote in Thursday's independence referendum, it has emerged.Sources told The Independent the moves have been taking place over the past week or so in order to make sure ATMs do not run out on Friday in the event of a panic reaction to a “yes” vote. There have been some suggestions that people will want to move their money to English banks in the event of an independence vote.
Bankers stressed there has been no sign yet of any increase in the amount of withdrawals from deposit accounts or ATMs, stressing that there was no need because the Bank of England has pledged to stand behind all accounts for at least 18 months in the event of a “yes” vote.

INC News, 16/09/2014-copyright©INCNews

he Press Agencies report that the American and allied began air raids in order to locate and destroy jihaidists sites in Iraq.
The concern increases because already twice the Americans have made mistakes in the use of their aircraft. The fight jihaidists  believe should be a union of troops on the ground covered by the Air Force, after an ultimatum that does not exist in both the parties. They are few, compared with the multinational forces that may attack, but the knowledge that can be detonated at any time in any place of the world, and they have always shown. We believe that only formally a total union of Eastern and Western Nations, together, can really create a certain fear to attack again on their part. Do not forget that all of them are willing to everything for their idea, so much to die all together, succumb, but after inflicting immense losses to their religious potential enemy. It could also give rise to a sort of "search the enemy" with people who fight each other for religious ideals that have nothing to do with earthly life.
