At least 10 children have died after three tourist vessels were caught in a lake storm in Karelia, northwest Russia, police told TASS. All the children were from Moscow, according to Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, citing preliminary data.
“There has been a great tragedy in Karelia,” Sobyanin said. “According to the preliminary data, 10 children from Moscow have died on Lake Syamozero. Condolences to the families and friends [of the victims],” the mayor wrote on Twitter. The number of casualties could stand at 11, sources told TASS and Interfax. Two people appear to still be missing.
The incident took place on Lake Syamozero, a large freshwater lake in the Republic of Karelia, according to an official from Karelia’s Culture Ministry, Ekaterina Biktimirova.
“The group of 49 people started its voyage on Saturday… There were children between 12 and 15 years old with a guardian. They were caught by a storm overnight. There are casualties,” she told TASS. Sources told Interfax that the bodies of at least six victims were recovered from the bottom of the lake. The tourist group consisted of two boats and one raft, according to information from the Emergencies Ministry. Rescuers have managed to save 11 people so far, the ministry said in a statement.
One girl reportedly managed to reach the shore of the local resort by herself. Moscow authorities are sending rescuers, doctors, psychologists and social workers to the scene.
The head of the Republic of Karelia, Alexander Khudilaynen, is also heading there.
