RUSSIA - Russian trawler sinks in Sea of Okhotsk, 9 feared dead

At least nine people are feared dead after the fishing freezer trawler “Dalniy Vostok” sank in the Sea of Okhotsk off the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russian Far East. “The state of emergency became known on Thursday morning. We have information that eight people from the trawler died, another 25 sailors are on the life raft, they are alive,” Chief of Maritime Rescue of the seaport of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Arthur Retz told Interfax. Eleven vessels are now reportedly in the area of the sunken ship and are trying to rescue the sailors. He also noted that about 132 people are believed to have been aboard the ship.
Meanwhile the Russian Ministry of Emergencies specified that 10 vessels in the area are aiding with the rescue. It notes that so far over 40 people have been rescued. The cause of the accident remains unknown.
