Ireland becomes first country to approve gay marriage in referendum
With almost all the votes counted, Ireland has become the first nation in the world to legalize same-sex marriages by popular vote.
With 39 constituencies now declared, 1,128,209 (or 62.3 percent) of voters have said Yes and 682,932 (37.7%) have said No to same sex marriage in Ireland. Results for three more constituencies are still outstanding.
Local mediaalready proclaims that the Friday referendum has granted ultimate support to gay marriages, a culmination of a four-decade struggle for gay rights.
