Gunman takes several people hostage in Moscow bank
Several clients and members of staff have been trapped in a bank branch in eastern Moscow, after a man brandishing a pistol entered the premises, demanding money. An armed police team has been dispatched to seal off the building.
A live feed from the Life. ru news portal shows a squad of armed officers taking up positions around the entrance to a bank, and a sniper at the door pointing a rifle inside.
Moscow police has issued a statement saying that five hostages had been freed after negotiations with the bank robber, and that between one and three still remains inside.
Earlier, police sources told Interfax news agency that the man entered the branch of the Moscow Credit Bank at 8.40 pm on Wednesday evening, holding what appeared to be a pistol or convincing replica, and instructed the cashiers to empty the cash vaults.
The staff pressed the panic button, at which point the gunman barricaded himself inside one of the offices with at least six clients and employees, including one woman.
The hostage taker then relayed the message that they would not be set free, until he was given the money inside the branch.
