The first terror attack in Kuwait claimed by ISIL militants struck as worshippers gathered for Friday prayers at a Shi’ite mosque. A suicide bomber blew himself up, killing 27 people and wounding 227 others. One MP who was in the mosque said the explosives the bomber detonated, destroyed walls and the ceiling. Around 2,000 people were in the building at the time of the blast. Security forces quickly sealed off the perimeter of the mosque while rescue workers carried the wounded to hospital. Kuwait is a predominantly Sunni state – Shi’ites make up about 30 percent of the population. But the two communities are said to live side by side with little friction. The Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Sabah says the bombing violated the sanctity of the Holy Month of Ramadan. A day of mourning has been declared for Saturday.
