All Eurostar services are set to be cancelled today and trains are returning to their stations after a fire in the Channel Tunnel. Passengers are expected to face major delays after Eurostar, which operates car and lorry-carrying trains through the tunnel, said it had been closed in both directions. Kent Police said the smoke was caused by a lorry fire at the French end of the tunnel and no-one was believed to be hurt.
Messages to several customers from Eurostar's Twitter account said the tunnel would be closed "until this evening". One passenger, Helen Todd, tweeted: "Smoke in the channel tunnel! So unlucky! Hope they sort it soon!"
A Kent police spokesman said: "A lorry fire has led to the closure of both bores of the Channel Tunnel.
