The Ukrainian government has signed a ceasefire agreement with pro-Russian rebels who have been fighting in the east of the country. The deal was brokered on Friday at talks in the Belarussian capital Minsk and has been confirmed by the Ukrainian President, Petro Poroshenko.
The European security organisation, the OSCE, also confirmed the deal, which is due to come into force at 18.00 local time in Ukraine, 17.00 CEST. Reuters reported that a source close to the talks said it would include a prisoner exchange and that all armed forces in the region would remain in their current positions. The ceasefire must be observed by the separatists too and be monitored by international OSCE observers, Poroshenko said in a statement published on his website.
